FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Ramapal

The sovereign who recovered Varendra and revived the prestige of the imperial house in its final great age.

Ramapal's recovery of Varendra is narrated at length in Sandhyakar Nandi's Ramacharitam. He assembled a coalition of regional allies and defeated the Kaivarta ruler Bhima, reversing the loss suffered during his brother's reign.

The text describes the splendid city of Ramavati and the landscape of northern Bengal. Its literary ambition is immense: the narrative simultaneously evokes the Ramayana and the king's political restoration.

Ramapal stands among the most consequential later monarchs, yet the celebration of his return should be read beside the poem's evident courtly bias.
