The Khalimpur copperplate of Dharmapal is the essential document behind the story. It suggests that leading political actors chose Gopal to restore order. It does not describe a modern parliamentary election, and the identities of every participant are not recoverable.

The remarkable outcome was durability. A regional consolidation grew into a line of sovereigns that persisted, with interruptions and restorations, for approximately four centuries. The dynasty’s achievements therefore belong not to one uninterrupted moment of conquest but to an unusually long sequence of governance, adaptation and cultural patronage.

Bengal’s river routes, fertile tracts, older urban centres and connection with Magadha gave the new state its resources. Early royal power was not imagined as a modern nation-state: rule worked through territories, local elites, military power and grants of privilege.
