Devapal
Under Devapal the crown remained a first-rank power, and its reputation travelled beyond the subcontinent.
Devapal maintained the ambitious political programme of Dharmapal. His charters and later eulogies describe military activity towards the frontiers of Kamarupa and Utkala; the sweeping extent of some royal claims remains contested by historians.
A celebrated copperplate records the request of Balaputradeva, ruler of the Shailendra realm, for support for a religious foundation at Nalanda. It is valuable evidence for the wider diplomatic and scholarly connections of the court.
Devapal's reign marks the height of early Pal political standing. His successors inherited prestige, but the long-term durability of imperial control varied sharply by region.
