Dharmapal
The dynasty became a great northern Indian power under Dharmapal, whose ambition reached the court of Kannauj.
Dharmapal transformed the power inherited from Gopal into a formidable monarchy across Bengal and Bihar. He entered the tripartite contest for Kannauj against the Gurjara-Pratiharas and Rashtrakutas, a struggle in which alliances and reverses mattered as much as battlefield victories.
The Khalimpur grant celebrates his attendance at an assembly of regional rulers and his installation of Chakrayudha at Kannauj. Courtly eulogy should be read critically: influence over a ruler did not automatically mean direct administration of every territory mentioned.
He is closely associated with the foundation of Vikramashila and the great establishment at Somapura. His imperial reign united kingship, scholarship, and monument-building on an exceptional scale.
