Varendra
The northern Bengal heartland
The ancient region of Varendra, broadly corresponding to parts of northwestern Bangladesh and neighbouring West Bengal, was central to the rise of the Pal house. Its loss during the Kaivarta rebellion and reconquest under Rampal made it an enduring symbol of political legitimacy. The exact ancient frontiers varied and cannot be represented by a single modern boundary.
The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.
Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.
