FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Mahipal II

His reign became associated with a rebellion that altered the fate of northern Bengal.

According to the court poem Ramacharitam, Mahipal II faced a rebellion in Varendra and was killed amid the struggle. The poem, written in praise of his brother Rampal, is indispensable but partisan.

The Kaivarta leader Divya emerged as a ruler of Varendra after this upheaval. Historians continue to debate how far the conflict was rooted in aristocratic faction, local autonomy or social tensions.

The episode is not simply a tale of a lost battle: it exposes the limits of royal command over powerful regional interests.
