FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Nayapal

A ruler of the eleventh century remembered in accounts of conflict and settlement with the Kalachuri kingdom.

Nayapal succeeded Mahipal I and inherited a restored but contested realm. The Kalachuri ruler Karna figures in accounts of hostilities during this period.

Tibetan literary traditions attribute a role in reconciling the two courts to the Buddhist teacher Atisha. The precise sequence of diplomatic events is not beyond dispute, but the account reflects the interconnected worlds of scholarship and interstate politics.

Royal records survive unevenly, so the detailed history of his reign is more fragile than that of the early imperial peaks.
