FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Gopal IV

A late ruler often numbered Gopal III in alternative genealogical systems.

This Gopal followed Kumarpal in the later dynastic line. Because scholars disagree about whether to count an earlier Gopal II, he appears under different numerals in the literature.

Few secure biographical details survive. Assigning sweeping conquests or individual architectural works to him would overstate the evidence.

His reign belongs to the period when the older Pal system was giving way to a different configuration of eastern Indian kingdoms.

In the historical record

  • ◆Alternative numbering as Gopal III
  • ◆Later dynastic line
  • ◆Sparse surviving evidence
