Utkala
The southern-western edge of the imperial horizon
The Utkala region appears in accounts of the expansive ambitions of Devpal and later rulers. Its political relationship with the court changed over time and should not be reduced to a permanent imperial border.
The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.
Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.
