Sarnath

An ancient centre beyond the dynastic heartland

FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Sarnath

An ancient centre beyond the dynastic heartland

Sarnath, far older than the dynasty, is associated with restoration and patronage during the age of Mahipal I. It demonstrates how royal religious patronage could extend beyond an administrative core.

The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.

Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.
