Pundravardhana

The ancient northern settlement and administrative sphere

Pundravardhana, associated with the Mahasthangarh area, formed part of the long urban history of northern Bengal. Its administrative identity appears across periods and offers essential context for the world in which the Pal dynasty took shape.

The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.

Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.
