Odantapuri
A major monastic foundation near the region of modern Bihar Sharif
Traditionally associated with the earlier Pal monarchs, Odantapuri belonged to the great network of eastern Indian centres of study. Few original structures can be confidently identified today, and proposed locations require archaeological caution.
The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.
Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.
