Kannauj

The prize of the tripartite struggle

Kannauj was the symbolic centre of northern Indian imperial rivalry. Dharmapal’s political intervention there illustrates the distinction between influence over a client ruler and continuous direct rule over the entire Ganges plain.

The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.

Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.
