FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Kamarupa

An eastern neighbour in imperial claims and diplomacy

Royal eulogies associate Devpal’s military prestige with campaigns towards Kamarupa. Exact degrees of direct rule or tributary allegiance remain difficult to establish.

The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.

Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.

A note on historical certainty
