Jagaddala
A late imperial institution in Varendra
Jagaddala is linked in literary tradition to the later Pal kings, especially Rampal. The precise location has been discussed by historians and archaeologists; the scholarly centre should not be represented by an invented surviving palace.
The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.
Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.
