Gauda
A powerful name in early medieval kingship
Gauda denoted a prominent historical region and political tradition associated with western Bengal. The royal style Gaudeshvara attached prestige to sovereigns of the area; the word did not mean a fixed capital or unchanging territory throughout four centuries.
The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.
Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.
