Bhagalpur
An important gateway to the eastern Ganges plain
The Bhagalpur area connects several themes: the Narayanpal Shaiva endowment, Dharmapal’s Vikramashila, and the riverine connections between Bengal and Magadha. It was part of a wider administrative and cultural corridor.
The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.
Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.
