Badal Pillar
The ministerial record of the imperial house
The Badal inscription in the Varendra region preserves a striking succession of court ministers and recollections of kings. Its verses are important to the genealogy of both rulers and the Brahmanical elite.
The significance of this place is best understood through the movement of people and royal power across eastern India. Inscriptions, surviving archaeological remains, early literary texts and museum collections offer different kinds of evidence. None should be forced into a single oversimplified map of imperial borders.
Modern place names and boundaries do not necessarily correspond to historical administrative districts. This entry describes the location as part of the imperial world; it does not imply continuous direct control throughout every reign.
