FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Jayapal

A figure associated with Dharmapal and Devpal, and important to the collateral succession.

The Badal and copperplate traditions connect Jayapal with military service. The line descending from him supplied later rulers and underpinned one version of the imperial genealogy.

The available sources provide only fragments of a life that intersected with the four-century history of the Pal dynasty. To understand this figure, it is necessary to read surviving charters, later literary accounts and scholarly interpretations together.

The person is included in the archive because imperial history is made not by kings alone, but also by queens, counsellors, opponents, artists, scholars and the creators of political memory.

A note on historical certainty
