THE IMPERIAL ARCHIVEEST. c. 750 CE
FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Chakrayudha

A ruler backed by Dharmapal during the contest for the great northern city.

The Khalimpur charter describes Dharmapal’s installation of Chakrayudha at Kannauj. He represents the politics of overlordship: a tributary or protected ruler need not imply direct incorporation into imperial territory.

The available sources provide only fragments of a life that intersected with the four-century history of the Pal dynasty. To understand this figure, it is necessary to read surviving charters, later literary accounts and scholarly interpretations together.

The person is included in the archive because imperial history is made not by kings alone, but also by queens, counsellors, opponents, artists, scholars and the creators of political memory.

A note on historical certainty
