Bhima of Varendra

The regional sovereign defeated in Rampal’s campaign of restoration.

THE IMPERIAL ARCHIVEEST. c. 750 CE
FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Bhima of Varendra

The regional sovereign defeated in Rampal’s campaign of restoration.

In the Ramacharitam, Bhima’s defeat becomes the central event of Rampal’s triumph. The portrait is that of a court poet writing for the victorious side, not a neutral biography.

The available sources provide only fragments of a life that intersected with the four-century history of the Pal dynasty. To understand this figure, it is necessary to read surviving charters, later literary accounts and scholarly interpretations together.

The person is included in the archive because imperial history is made not by kings alone, but also by queens, counsellors, opponents, artists, scholars and the creators of political memory.

A note on historical certainty

This is a commemorative account, not a claim of uninterrupted political supremacy or documentary certainty. Royal eulogies, later literature and modern reconstructions are distinguished where possible.
