THE IMPERIAL ARCHIVEEST. c. 750 CE
FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Balaputradeva

An overseas ruler connected with Devpal through the Nalanda endowment.

Devpal’s charter records a request from Balaputradeva for the support of a monastery at Nalanda. It is among the most remarkable surviving traces of Indian Ocean diplomacy under the empire.

The available sources provide only fragments of a life that intersected with the four-century history of the Pal dynasty. To understand this figure, it is necessary to read surviving charters, later literary accounts and scholarly interpretations together.

The person is included in the archive because imperial history is made not by kings alone, but also by queens, counsellors, opponents, artists, scholars and the creators of political memory.
