FROM THE IMPERIAL CHRONICLE

Atisha Dipankara

An internationally influential teacher born in the Bengal region during the Pal age.

Atisha studied in eastern Indian centres of learning and later travelled to Tibet, where his influence on religious study endured. He is part of the wider intellectual history of the empire, not an imperial ruler.

The available sources provide only fragments of a life that intersected with the four-century history of the Pal dynasty. To understand this figure, it is necessary to read surviving charters, later literary accounts and scholarly interpretations together.

The person is included in the archive because imperial history is made not by kings alone, but also by queens, counsellors, opponents, artists, scholars and the creators of political memory.
